Bryan DeBates, Space Foundation Vice President - Education, and Elias Molen, Manager - Space Education, were recently honored by the Colorado Air Force Association with the Colorado Medal of Merit. The award was given to DeBates and Molen for their work in the partnership between the Space Foundation and the Air Force Association's (AFA) StellarXplorers program. Each year, schools from across the U.S. and from overseas Department of Defense locations compete in a series of challenges using Systems Tool Kit, modeling software created by Analytical Graphics, Inc. (AGI). The top 10 teams competed last April in the National Finals in the AGI Space Missions Simulation Lab at the Space Foundation Discovery Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The competition is scheduled so that the finals coincide with the Space Foundation's Space Symposium each year.

The event has grown in popularity over the past two years. In 2016, 27 teams registered for the StellarXplorers program, and that number has grown to 135 for the 2017 competition. Once again, the top 10 teams will compete at the Space Foundation Discovery Center, April 5-9, 2017. Students competing in the event will also have the opportunity to tour the 33rd Space Symposium's Boeing Exhibit Center during their time in Colorado Springs.

"The partnership between the Air Force Association and the Space Foundation has turned out to be an incredible opportunity for the young people who compete in this event. These students are our future space leaders and workforce, and they are learning valuable tools for their future careers. This partnership also shows what kind of programs can be created when schools, industry and organizations such as the Space Foundation and the Air Force Association, work together for the good of students and the good of our future workforce," said Bryan DeBates. "I am deeply honored by this award, and look forward to working with the Air Force Association for many years to come."

Elias Molen agreed. "The StellarXplorer program is an ideal example of the perfect partnership between our mission here at the Space Foundation to "inspire, enable and propel" students to future careers, and the missions of the Air Force Association, the educational outreach of Analytical Graphics, Inc., and the inspiration of the Space Symposium," he said. "This is a powerful program, and I hope it continues to spread to high school students around the world."

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 10, 2016) - The Space Foundation has received a grant from the Project Management Institute Educational Foundation (PMIEF) for a two-year initiative to help teachers and students prepare for the demands of the future workforce.

The $192,125 grant will fund an initiative entitled "Out of this World Project Management," an enhancement of Space Foundation education programs that inspire students to pursue careers in STEM fields -- science, technology, engineering and math -- and which integrate 21st century skills, including teamwork, collaboration, problem solving, communication and leadership.

"Out of this World Project Management" will target approximately 375 students and 15 teachers in Colorado and in Pune, India, where nearly 30 educators represent the Space Foundation's international Teacher Liaison program. Using the Space Foundation's Mars Robotics Laboratory, located at its Discovery Center in Colorado Springs, and PMIEF's Project Management Toolkit for Teachers (Toolkit), an 8-hour training program will be delivered to Pikes Peak region secondary school STEM teachers, and delivered virtually to the teachers in India.

The initiative will also fund field trips to the Space Foundation Discovery, where students will learn project management skills while working in teams in the Mars Robotics Laboratory.

"The 21st century demands skills like project management that prepare young people for success in science, technology, engineering and math so they can keep pace with the world we live in," said Michael DePrisco, PMIEF Chief Operating Officer and PMI Vice President, Global Membership and Chapters. "Our collaboration with the Space Foundation will help students acquire and apply project management knowledge, even as they engage in the kind of hands-on learning that encourages curiosity and ingenuity."

"The students who visit the Space Foundation's Mars Robotics Laboratory represent the generation that will send the first humans to Mars," said Kevin Cook, Space Foundation Vice President - Marketing & Communications. "This grant will enable us to provide the tools they need to effectively execute that mission and other career goals. PMIEF and the Space Foundation are both working to grow an organic workforce, and to empower future workers to realize their full potential."

Because the Space Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, philanthropy is critical to its education mission to inspire and build a STEM-based workforce and the next generation of explorers and innovators. Learn more about Space Foundation education programs at www.discoverspace.org.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 8, 2016) - The Space Foundation today commented on the death of Col. John H. Glenn, Jr., USMC (Ret.), 95, the last of the Mercury Seven astronauts, military test pilots selected by NASA in 1959 to become America's first astronauts.

"U.S. success in space was built on the courage and determination of men like John Glenn, who dedicated his life to serving his country and proving what humans could accomplish in space," said Kevin Cook, Space Foundation - Vice President, Marketing & Communications.

In 1962, Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth, and the fifth human in space. He was also the oldest person to go into space when, in 1998 at the age of 77, he returned to space as a Payload Specialist on Discovery's STS-95 mission.

An Ohio native, Glenn was a U.S. Marine Corps aviator, engineer and United States Senator. He was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1990.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 15, 2016) - Each spring, during its Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, the Space Foundation confers its highest honor -- the General James E. Hill Lifetime Space Achievement Award.

The 2017 honoree is Piers Sellers, Ph.D., OBE, British-born former NASA astronaut and climate scientist currently serving as Deputy Director, Sciences & Exploration Directorate, and Acting Director, Earth Sciences Division, at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. He became became an American citizen in 1991 to pursue his dream of going to space.

Sellers was nominated for the award by British space journalist and broadcaster Sarah Cruddas, with endorsement by British media personality Carol Vorderman MBE and former NASA astronauts Garrett Reisman, Kenneth Ham, Michael Good and Gregory Johnson.

In nominating Sellers, Cruddas wrote: He has dedicated his life to Earth and Space Science, from working in climatology for NASA, to three amazing Space Shuttle missions and helping lead the Goddard Space Flight Center. From his numerous appearances on TV and radio, including on the iconic British TV show The Sky at Night, to writing articles for the general public about climate science, he has attracted international respect.

In an article published in The New York Times, Jan. 16, 2016, Sellers made public his diagnosis of stage four pancreatic cancer.

In announcing the selection of Sellers, Space Foundation Board Chairman ADM James O. Ellis, Jr., USN (Ret.), said, "Dr. Sellers is an incredibly accomplished and highly regarded scientist, astronaut and author who has made superb contributions to his science, been a treasured friend and teammate to his astronaut colleagues, and, quietly and professionally, through his observation and study of our planet, benefited us all. He has spent much of his professional life studying our Earth's climate and has devoted himself to analyzing and communicating the nature of climate change and why action matters." Ellis continued, "Not long after receiving the cancer diagnosis, Dr. Sellers, showing extraordinary courage and true humanity, said: 'As an astronaut I spacewalked 220 miles above the Earth. Floating alongside the International Space Station, I watched hurricanes cartwheel across oceans, the Amazon snake its way to the sea through a brilliant green carpet of forest, and gigantic nighttime thunderstorms flash and flare for hundreds of miles along the Equator. From this God's-eye-view, I saw how fragile and infinitely precious the Earth is. I'm hopeful for its future. And so, I'm going to work tomorrow.' Dr. Sellers is an incredibly optimistic man with tremendous faith in people and their ability to bring about positive change. We are honored to have the opportunity to recognize him for his lifetime of achievement."

About Piers Sellers
Born in Sussex, England, Sellers earned a Bachelor of Science degree in ecological science from the University of Edinburgh and a doctorate in biometeorology from the University of Leeds. He also trained as a Royal Air Force cadet to pilot gliders and powered aircraft. Astronaut Neil Armstrong endorsed Sellers for an OBE (Order of the British Empire), and Sellers has been honored by the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

His career as a research meteorologist at the Goddard Space Flight Center, focused on computer modelling of climate systems. He became an American citizen in 1991, and was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1996. He flew on three Space Shuttle missions, including STS-121, the "Return to Flight" mission after the loss of Columbia. He logged more than 559 hours in space and nearly 41 EVA hours during six spacewalks.

Earlier this year, Sellers was interviewed by film producer Leonardo DiCaprio for his documentary Before the Flood, and he discussed the NASA missions underway to study changes in the Earth's atmosphere, water and land masses.
